13. The Quiz - Answers - This is the building on the Linden Field encircled by a clipped hedge and is now the shelter for the bowling club. It was originally used as a shelter on the railway platform behind the station house.
- The grooved wall is on the churchyard side of Holy Trinity Church at the back under the south window of the Lady Chapel. Men used to sharpen their arrows whilst their masters were attending service
- Dr. William Penny Brookes is the founding father of the modern Olympic games, he was the town doctor in Much Wenlock and he lived in the house across from Holy Trinity Church.
- The hand clamps or irons on the oak beam were on the front of The Guildhall. They are on the oak upright beam on the left side of the entrance gate and their use was to make the beam a whipping post. The jail was the old stone end of the Guildhall closest to the church.
- The author was Mary Webb. She wrote many books about her beloved Shropshire including GONE TO EARTH which was made into a film in 1949 using locations in and around Much Wenlock. The Mary Webb Society has a memorial stone in her honour in the garden behind The Guildhall.
- St. Milburga's Well is named after Wenlock’s female saint and it is was thought to have special powers. It was also probably the first water source for the town.
- They are called "Shuts". The two main ones are Mutton Shut, just after Cruck House Antiques and the George Shut just to the right of the George & Dragon Pub.
- The clock in The Square was erected to commemorate The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897 and in The Guildhall there is the coat of arms of Queen Elizabeth I dating back to 1589.
- The wooden stocks in The Guildhall were on wheels and had places where criminals placed their hands and feet in holes that were then secured tightly, making them unable to move, they were then rolled around town for all to see the offenders as a form of public humiliation.
- The trail that goes around town and up to the Linden Field with the aide of bronze markers in the pavement is the Olympian Trail.
- There are many more ghosts that have been experienced in Wenlock than those discussed in our walk, but we started with the 3 people who were found during a church restoration and sometimes appear in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church with their heads bowed. The George and Dragon Pub had a black dog that used to guard the beer in the cellar. On the High Street you saw an impressive timber frame house called Raynald’s Mansion where it is said there are Victorian children who play on the porches late at night.
