The Windmill at Much Wenlock

Windmill Hill is a 2.7 hectare site of limestone pasture land and wooded area situated on the Northern boundary of the town. The windmill tower stands at the summit of the hill. Grid Ref: SJ 629003.

The whole area is leased from Wenlock Estates and managed by the Trust for the residents of, and visitors to, Much Wenlock.

By the year 2002 it was apparent that the windmill tower was deteriorating at an accelerated rate so the small Committee under the Chairmanship of Mr Dave Gibbon set out to seek funding for repairing and preservation of the building.

In 2003 the committee gained Charitable Status and also joined the DEFRA Countryside Stewardship Scheme to help maintain the whole of the site.

The task of seeking a Grant for preserving the windmill tower continued and although a number of small beneficiaries came forward initially it wasn’t until 2005 that Bridgnorth District Council agreed to assist funding this first phase of repairs.

Repair work commenced in April ’06 and was completed during September '06.

Further funding assistance has been received from both Shropshire Hills SHAONB Partnership (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and the Midland Wind and Water Mills Group.

The Trust is extremely grateful for these contributions.

The Trust Committee wishes to record their appreciation to Mr Peter Lewis (Asterley Mill) for his advice and interest in our project, to Gareth Hughes and Mr Adam Marriott (Cotswold millwright), for their thorough review and comments on the survey material presented. The comments have been noted and the text up-dated accordingly.

The contribution of Mr Tim Booth (Midland Wind and Water Mills Group) has been invaluable in our pursuit of historical material.

Many thanks are due to Lady Forester (Willey Estates) for the kind permission to view selected Estate Documents and to Will Motley for confirming the family details included in the text.

The contribution of Sabine Hutchinson (Virtual Shropshire) for the excellent photography incorporated within this presentation is highly appreciated.

How to contact and to help with the Trust

A ‘Friends of the Trust’ has already been established and it is hoped that funds can be raised to enable the additional work to be undertaken.

The Trust committee would welcome further, confirmed, historical details of the windmill especially early painting, photographs and written documentation in order to establish a more comprehensive record of its design and usage.
